Navigating the Island

While the Town of Oak Island also encompasses several square miles on the mainland, this is mostly distributed along Middleton Blvd. and Long Beach Road. Streets in the "island" portions of Town are laid out in a basic "grid pattern" with numbered streets running north to south.

Like using the X and Y axis on a grid, navigation becomes simple when viewing Middleton Ave. and Oak Island Drive as the starting point. Every numbered street begins with its location, relative to either Oak Island Drive (North / South) or Middleton Ave. (East / West).

So if you don't know where you are, or where you want to get to, think of the Navigation Guide below, and just look to the first two letters of your nearest street number!

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • After 79th St., streets are no longer numbered but instead are named (West to East):
    • Crowell St.  >  Sherill St.  >  Barbee Blvd.  >  Womble St.  >  Keziah St.  >  Trott St.  >  Norton St.  >  Mercer St.  >  Sellers St.  >  McGlamery St.
  • E Beach Dr. ends at SE 58th St. and resumes from SE 74th St. to SE 79th St.
  • After E Beach Dr. ends, beachfront driving continues on Ocean Dr. from Se 79th St. to McGlamery St.

NAVIGATION TIPS:

  • Want to ride along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)? use Yacht Dr. & Elizabeth Dr.!
  • Want to ride directly through Town? Use Oak Island Dr. all the way!
  • Want to ride along the beachfront areas? Use Beach Dr. & Ocean Dr.!
  • Want to enjoy your travel using a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV / golf cart)? Try to AVOID busy streets like Oak Island Drive and Beach Drive. Instead, use slower, less busy streets to reach the nearest numbered street, like:
    • NORTH SIDE: Yacht Drive, Elizabeth Dr., E Oak Dr., E Holly Dr. NE,
    • SOUTH SIDE: White Ln. SW, Live Oak Dr., Pelican Dr., Dolphin Dr.,

FUN FACTS:

  • Due to several arcs in Oak Island Drive, some numbered streets are "missing" to allow block to line up, including: NE 43rd, NE 53rd, SE 60th, SE 62nd, and SE 65th streets
  • Barbee Blvd. has a Public Park & Nature Trail located in its median (Shipwreck Park)

Traveling By LSV

As with many small and coastal communities, the use of a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) is a popular means of travel through Town. Whether cruising to the beachfront for the day, or heading to the grocery store for a few quick items, LSVs provide a convenient, and environmentally friendly option for navigating the neighborhoods.

However, their low speed and sightseeing use can cause unwanted slowdowns in busier parts of the Island.

To make EAST - WEST travel on Oak Island easier, please AVOID long distance travel on any areas of Oak Island Drive (even in the 35 MPH zones).

INSTEAD use the 35 MPH streets like Yacht Drive, Beach Drive, E Holly Drive, E Oak Drive, & Ocean Drive, until you reach the street running NORTH - SOUTH that is nearest to your destination.

Also, if accessing the beach areas on the west end, DON’T use the intersection of Middleton Ave. and Oak Island Dr., as that is a 45 MPH zone. INSTEAD take W Yacht Drive to NW 1st St. and cross over W Oak Island Drive to reach White Ln. SW, where you can enter in at 35 MPH zone

Use the "Info Map" below for a visual aid on how to navigate Oak Island in an LSV.
