Pedestrian Safety

The Town of Oak Island is continually working to improve access and safety for pedestrian use, and becoming a more "walkable" town.  

Town management and staff are working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, to receive approval and installation of multiple new Sidewalks & Crosswalks.

PROJECT UPDATES

During Administrative Reports presented during the Town Council meetings on August 13 and September 10, Town Manager Kathryn Adams provided updates on multiple Pedestrian Safety improvement projects. 

E Oak Island Drive: Sidewalk Project

  • A new sidewalk has been approved for the north side of E Oak Island Drive, between NE 46th St an NE 56th St. (north side)
  • A signal crossing will also be installed at the intersection with 51st St - consisting of a three sided cross with painted walks on the north, south and east side
  • Final design specs will be sent to NCDOT for their review by the end of August  
  • TIMELINE: NCDOT expected bid out the project in early fall of 2024, and the contractor awarded the project will have 75 days to complete

Beach Drive: Crosswalks Project

  • A total of SIX (6) solar powered pedestrian crosswalks with crossing signals are planned for installation along Beach Drive at the intersections of: 
    • 57th Pl W
    • 9th Pl E.
    • 19th Pl E
    • SE 40th St
    • SE 46th St
    • SE 49th St
  • On each side of the street a pedestal signal will be installed with a single painted crosswalk
  • TIMELINE: Survey work is scheduled to begin by the end of August 2024, taking two (2) months to complete, then submitted to NCDOT for the permit to construct. Construction will be performed "in-house" by Public Works Department crews, taking about a month.
  • Target Completion Time = Spring 2025 (before Summer Tourism Season)

  • Three (3) Pedestrian Crosswalks have been installed at
  • Barbee Blvd -&- Ocean Drive
  • Keziah St -&- Ocean Drive
  • SE 49th St -&- E Dolphin Dr. (Kevin Bell Skatepark)
