A building code is a set of rules that specify the standards for constructed objects such as buildings and nonbuilding structures. Building codes ensure structural integrity; electrical, plumbing and mechanical system safety, as well as accessibility and practical and achievable levels of energy efficiency. Building codes underpin the work of architects, engineers, builders and developers.
A building code sets forth requirements to protect public health, safety and general welfare as they relate to construction and the occupancy of a building. These codes include specific requirements for building materials, fire protection, structural design, light and ventilation, heating and cooling, sanitary facilities and energy conservation.
