SPEED & TRAFFIC REPORTS
In May 2022, the Oak Island Police Department acquired a mobile radar unit. The goal of the purchase was to help record and prevent instances of speeding in residential and commercial areas. The unit is a SpeedAlert 18 model purchased from All Traffic Solutions out of Chantilly, VA. It comes with several features, most notably the 30"x20" easy-to-read full matrix display, which registers and displays the speed of all approaching vehicles.
The unit is rotationally deployed at multiple locations throughout Town, or in specific areas where concerns of speeding have been expressed.
Below is a brief summary of the dates and locations of the unit, along with a report of the Total Traffic Volume and Average Vehicle Speed.

TRAFFIC CALMING PROGRAM
The Mission of the Traffic Calming Program is to improve community safety and to preserve and enhance Town of Oak Island neighborhoods/subdivisions by working with residents and businesses to implement viable solutions to the negative impacts of automobile traffic on neighborhood/subdivision streets.
The Traffic Calming Program is implemented in two phases:
- Citizen Request & Town Evaluation
- Citizen Petition & Town Implementation of Approved Traffic Calming Measure(s)
The Traffic Calming Policy was originally implemented in 2022, and most recently updated in October, 2023, using criteria from NCDOT's Guidelines for Traffic Calming Devices and the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
